Blak Circle – Gallery Development Project Officer

We are seeking a Gallery Development Project Officer who can assist us to build the foundations for a thriving, sustainable gallery. This is a unique opportunity to support the future of an ambitious First Nations-led cultural space, establishing the systems, brand and audiences that will support long-term success.
In the gallery’s formative years, strong operational and business development skills will be essential. In this first year of operation, the successful candidate will work with the Murray Arts team to build and manage the gallery, develop and engage audiences, support and manage artist relationships, grow sales and implement the systems and processes needed for sustainable growth.
While curatorial experience is an advantage, this role will be primarily supported by the Board of Directors, exhibition artists and guest curators. The immediate priority is identifying the person who will support in transiting the vision into action, laying the groundwork for a dynamic and resilient organisation that will champion First Nations art and culture for years to come.

BLAK CIRCLE – GALLERY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT OFFICER
Albury (Wiradjuri Country) NSW, with occasional regional and interstate travel
SALARY: $80,000 pro rata + 12% employer contribution to superannuation

Part Time Fixed Contract (12 months): 25 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Blak Circle is a First Nations-led gallery and cultural enterprise being established on Wiradjuri Country, Albury. Formerly Burraja Gallery operated by Murray Arts, the Project Officer position will play a pivotal role in transitioning the gallery to an independent and sustainable First Nations-led model. Blak Circle aims to support First Nations artists, celebrate culture, and create economic opportunities for First Nations creatives across the Murray NSW and North East Victoria region.
Working closely with the Board of Directors, artists, Elders, and key stakeholders, the Project Officer will oversee the implementation of new systems and procedures, coordinate exhibitions and events, manage brand and audience development, and support the sale of artworks and merchandise both in-gallery and online.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone with experience in small business, arts management, community development, or not-for-profit operations who is passionate about supporting First Nations artists and cultural enterprises.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate gallery opening preparations, exhibition schedule and visitor experience.
- Ensure all activities align with Blak Circle’s vision, values, and cultural protocols.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with First Nations artists, Elders, communities, and cultural organisations.
- Develop and manage retail operations including artwork sales, merchandise, consignment arrangements, and inventory systems.
- Assist with brand transition, social media channels and website content.
- Assist with grant applications, funding acquittals, sponsorship proposals, and fundraising activities.
Essential Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated experience managing a small business, community organisation, arts organisation, or not-for-profit enterprise.
- Experience delivering projects, programs, events, or cultural initiatives.
- Strong marketing, communications, and/or social media skills.
- Excellent organisational, administrative, and financial management skills.
- Experience managing budgets, reporting, and funding requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across diverse communities and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, working respectfully with First Nations communities and cultural protocols.
- Current driver’s licence and ability to travel as required.
Desirable Selection Criteria
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage and connection to community.

- Experience working with First Nations artists, cultural organisations, or Aboriginal-led initiatives.
- Experience in gallery management, visual arts, cultural tourism, retail, or creative industries.
- Knowledge of artwork sales, merchandising, inventory management, and e-commerce platforms.
- Experience with grant writing, fundraising, sponsorship, or business development.
- Understanding of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles.
- Experience using digital marketing platforms, CRM systems, and online sales tools.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
Based on a 25-hour week, with actual days and times negotiated with the Executive Director. Working in the Creative Industry space this position can involve work outside normal working hours.
This position involves working primarily in an indoor environment. In addition to computer work, a moderate amount of physical activity may also be required, depending on the nature of the tasks undertaken.
